Birthdays!!

Birthdays, every year we have one.  Some people complain.  The alternative is far better.  lol.

I love birthdays whether it is mine, a family member or friend. My mother has ALWAYS celebrated holidays in a BIG way and Birthdays were no exception.  It makes me think back on a particular birthday party where I wore layered blue chiffon over taffetta.  (I remember all dates by what I wore..lol)  I believe I was 10 that year.  I remember the friends and family who were there to celebrate with me.  I definitely remember the beautiful cake with white marshmallow fluffy frosting (my favorite still).  It also had baby blue flat round candy medallions strategically placed in a single circle around the cake.   Funny though as I don't remember what I received as it is always about the cake and friends that I recall.

We lived at 5026 Curtis Clark in Corpus Christi.  We had a cabinet record/stereo player in the living room which, for the time, was a very nice piece of furniture.   We gathered around, spun the tunes and busted some moves. lol   "We" were the original spinners and led the path for future dj's.   lol

Another very special birthday for me was when we lived in Stone Mountain, Ga (a suburb of Atlanta).  Tom and Brian (5yrs old) took me to a beautiful, small restaurant for dinner.  (Atlanta had many wonderful gourmet restaurants in historic homes.  Hardwood floors, few tables, low lighting, absolutely beautiful and all required several days to get reservations.).  Anyway, the three of us were seated having a private dinner when our little Brian got out of his chair, came over to his Mommy with a small white box and returned to his chair.  Such a southern gentleman.  Then and now.  I opened the small box with great anticipation.  I knew a cherished drawing would not fit in this box, nor a frog or anything else he may have found in the yard.  He looked at me with a huge smile as I began to open the box.  Oh My!!  It's beautiful!!  Hugs and kisses around the table for all.  It was the most beautiful ring I could have imagined.  (I believe Dad had something to do with this as well.  lol)  I had always wanted a birthstone ring but for some reason never found one I really liked.  This was a total surprise.  A beautiful gold setting with a marquise cut blue topaz with layers of small cut diamonds/crystals cascading down each side. This was special for so many reasons.   I don't believe I have ever taken this ring off except to have it cleaned.  This ring is special but not any more special than the round orange stone ring that came out of a machine that Brian also gave me one year.  I have it in my jewelry box and would never think to part with it.  I get happy tears every time I see its tarnished metal and orange plastic stone placed strategically in my jewelry box.  It does not matter how much it costs but truly it is the love behind the thought that makes it so precious.

The thing I notice about my birthday is the significance of the color blue.  My blue layered chiffon dress at my 10th birthday party, blue candy on my cake, blue topaz ring and never being blue about having a birthday.   How could I.  It is another blessed day to be with and hear from family and friends.   Yes, I have another birthday soon. I certainly don't dread it.  Quite the contrary as the weather forecast tomorrow is mid 70's with blue skies.
